Sydney sprinter Ahdashim has made successful raid on the Group Three Standish Handicap, giving trainer Gerald Ryan a rare double in the Flemington feature.

Ryan first won the traditional New Year's Day 1200m sprint 24 years ago as a jockey on the Owen Lynch-trained Burano who sported the same yellow and blue spot silks worn by Craig Williams on Ahdashim.

The silks were made famous by Lynch and his impressive team of horses which included Better Draw and Bit Of A Skite, and he agreed to pass them on to Ryan when he became a trainer.

Ryan was apprenticed to Lynch and rode his horses for 13 years before he retired from the saddle when 32.

"They are a great set of colours and have won a lot of races," Ryan said.

Ahdashim is no stranger to Melbourne campaigns and was the winner of the MSS Security Sprint (1200m) at Flemington on Melbourne Cup day in 2009.

He just missed in a photo-finish when second to Keano at Flemington over 1400 metres on Oaks Day last year.

Ahdashim was a $150,000 yearling but Ryan said he was unable to syndicate the horse until just before he raced and it wasn't until he was gelded that he showed any ability.

He has won six races and been placed another nine times in 26 starts but struggles on rain-affected ground.

"The horse has been going terrific and deserved to win a good race," Ryan said.

"He has been placed behind some handy horses in his time and if you take the wet-track runs out of his form he is very honest and consistent.

"He travelled a bit closer than I thought he would today but Craig (Williams) said there wasn't a heap of speed in the race. I left it up to him."

Ahdashim ($7) had the Standish as his target after his last-start fourth to Swift Alliance in the Listed Razor Sharp Stakes (1200m) at Randwick two weeks ago.

Williams had the son of Elusive City with the leaders all the way and drove him clear at the 200 metres to score by 1-1/4 lengths from Chasm ($4.60 fav), who had little luck getting runs at the vital stages, with three-year-old Eclair Mystic ($5.50) a head away third.

Ryan said the Group One Newmarket Handicap (1200m) was now the autumn goal for Ahdashim.

"He might be a lightweight chance in the Newmarket because he goes well up the straight," Ryan said.

"He will go home on the float tomorrow and straight to the farm and on the water walker for three or four weeks.

"He won't have a long time out because he gets too gross and takes too long to get fit."
