Gerald Ryan is hoping "tough love" will develop Adnocon into a spring carnival contender after the gelding scored a dominant win in the $175,000 Listed Eye Liner Stakes at Ipswich on Saturday.

Adnocon clocked a new track record of 1:18.67, lowering the previous mark of 1:18.7 established by Rightson in 2008, to make it three wins from his past three runs.

Ryan has trained Adnocon for his past two preparations and admitted he thought the four-year-old would struggle to make it into open company when he arrived at his Rosehill stables.

"We gave him a hammering when we got him. He had 11 runs last preparation but he spelled really good," Ryan said.

"But to be perfectly honest I didn't think he was up to winning a race like that.

"I had probably been too soft on him when we got him but swimming him and longer, tougher pacework has turned him around."

Adnocon ($7) jumped brilliantly for jockey Paul Hammersley and the son of Clang cruised to the leaders rounding the bend before exploding away in the straight to record a 1-1/4-length win.

New Zealand sprinter Barinka ($7.50) raised her supporters' hopes in the straight when she emerged from the pack but she died on her run to finish second with Victorian visitor Maxisun ($7) a nose back third.

Part-owned by Brisbane racecaller David Fowler and Queensland bookmaker Hayden Flynn, Adnocon has now won seven races from 28 starts and Ryan said there was more to come.

"When I got him he had only won two races but maturity has turned him around," Ryan said.

"The horse is going really good and he will head to the Glasshouse Flying (Handicap) at his next run.

"I said to Hayden and the boys 'if he can win the Eye Liner and race well in the Glasshouse we'll pull up stumps and head to Melbourne with him'.

"The way he's improving he might win a race in the spring for us."

Drenalin started the $5.50 favourite and looked a winning chance when he found the front rounding the corner but tired late to finish fifth, beaten two lengths.
