Tough West Australian stayer Guyno got up for a last-stride win in the $300,000 Mornington Cup and trainer Lou Luciani is now targeting next month's Adelaide Cup.
The well-travelled seven-year-old started at $16 and was ridden by Perth jockey Jason Whiting to a nose victory over the $2.70 favourite Cedarberg with Shewan ($8) 1-3/4 lengths away third.
The winner of the Listed 2400m feature for the first time is exempt from the ballot for the Caulfield Cup, but Ascot trainer Lou Luciani realistically said that he didn't know whether the O'Reilly gelding would be up to the spring major.
"It's a great result. I keep saying if he was a hand taller he could have doubled his stake earnings," Luciani said.
"He's just a tough horse. He's my mate and he just doesn't let you down.
"It's going to be a sad day when he leaves because the whole stable lightens up when he's there.
"He's just a great little dude and while he keeps going well we'll keep him in the stable.
"We're going to Adelaide now so we'll see what happens."
The Group Two Adelaide Cup (3200m) is at Morphettville on March 14.
The gelding has started 49 times for seven wins, 17 placings and $1,233,450 in prizemoney.
The 2007 Group One WATC Derby (2400m) winner hadn't won since his victory in the 2009 Group Two Perth Cup (2400m) and the Mornington Cup was Guyno's first win in Victoria.
He was runner-up to Guest Wing in this year's Perth Cup on New Year's Day after which Luciani freshened him up and he was coming off a seven-week break between runs on Wednesday.
Guyno ran 12th to Viewed in the 2008 Melbourne Cup.
Whiting was caught three-wide on him on Wednesday and was unable to get one off the fence until 1000m out when he was positioned fourth.
The gelding got to second behind Cedarberg who had scooted away under Michael Walker after hitting the front at the 600m.
Cedarberg looked home when two or three lengths clear on straightening butGuyno wore him down right on the line.
Mornington trainer Pat Carey, who prepares Cedarberg, was philosophical in defeat.
"What can you say. The winner sat three-wide for the first 1200 metres. I'm not complaining when you see the run the winner had," he said.
"He (Cedarberg) may have got there a touch early. He looked like he was home and he wasn't.
"We'll get over this one and work out where we go."
There are several options for Cedarberg who is still in the Australian Cup (2000m) at Flemington on March 12 and The BMW (2400m) at Rosehill during the Sydney autumn carnival.
