There are times in gambling when the Gods favour the hardy betting crew known as the punter. On Saturday I ended up the day a handsome amount in front, and feeling about ten metres tall, after two wins in two different betting arenas.

Let it be known I have backed Geelong seven times for seven wins this year for above average amounts when they were at prohibitive odds down as low as $1.10 and a maximum of $1.50 when they faced, in my opinion, quite beatable opposition. I was very, very lucky to win against the Western Bulldogs when Brad Johnston missed a tough angle kick, but one he was quite capable of drilling, with six seconds to go however the others were won according to script.

On Saturday, I backed Geelong to win the AFL Grand Final at $1.64 reasoning that St Kilda would be quite tired in the last quarter considering the brutal game they won against the Bulldogs the weekend before. I believed that if this particular Grand Final was played 10 times Geelong would win 6.5 of them thus $1.64 was about the right price to accept. Well, barring the first few minutes in the first quarter, when Geelong starred, the rest of the game saw St Kilda as just odds on ($1.80) until the last two or three minutes when Paul Chapman of Geelong kicked a skyscraper goal. The only time I was confident of winning was when Geelong managed the next score, a dribbling point, as St Kilda would have needed two goals to win and they were dead on their feet. Never ever, ever again will I bet such an amount on any Grand Final.

Just when I was virtually conceding losing my Grand Final bet along came the George Main Stakes at the Randwick arena. The hot favourite was Racing To Win at just over $2 on Betfair and justifiably so as he trounced a similar field last start with nothing in this field representing being a true favourite. Well, I have been in this ship before so on went a saver on Vision And Power at $24 on Betfair AND how could I not be on Road To Rock after the write up in my blog, at the juicy odds of $48, thank you very much. I might add that $60 was available just as they moved into the stalls but I have also been in this particular ship too and I reasoned if it won I would recover the lost footy bet and perhaps a profit on the day if Madame Pedrille won the last. Just how much can you put on a roughie?

Well, bless its little heart and away it zoomed beating Black Piranha (he just ran out of condition 2nd up) and once I had sat down following my victory dance and punching eight holes in the air I pondered what could have been if Geelong was ahead by five goals. As you now know Geelong struggled to win AND Madame Pedrille fell in by a short half head and my pockets bulged, metaphorically, with heaps of the folding paper.

Yes, there are days when it all falls into your lap however I have been in that ship as well! Next Saturday is next Saturday and I have to remember this racing game is a year long thing and that becoming too cocky is a path to destruction. Just the same I will say, one thing ,"Bring it on".
