What went wrong with the much-hyped UK raider Cima de Triomphe in the Caulfield Cup? No-one seems to know. Trainer Luca Cumani's wife Sara Cumani was shocked by CDT''s performance, but says he may still tackle another race this spring. She says: 'Not much I can say really, the horse was very average. We might look at another race if he pulls up OK.'' CDT needed to finish in the top 8 to qualify for a Melbourne Cup start next month, but instead he turned in the worst run of his 15-start career.

There's still hope for the Cumani stable. It has Basaltico running in Wed's Geelong Cup 2400m and he needs to win it to qualify for a start in the Melbourne Cup.

Godolphin's Kirklees was a little better than Cima de Triomphe. He ran 7th. Stable rep Tommy Strang says Kirklees came through the race in good order and he expects the stable to push on to the Melbourne Cup, hopefully with travelling partner Crime Scene who runs in the Geelong Cup on Wednesday.
