Let's face facts - Americain should have won the Australian Cup at Flemington. Maybe that 'cold' ride was just a little too cold from Steven Arnold? Trainer David Hayes could hardly hide his disappointment. He says: 'He hit the line the way we wanted but a few little things went against him and, put them together, I think it cost him victory...From the outside barrier he had to go back to the tail and follow Precedence, who was never going to take him into the race. Trainer David Hayes could hardly hide his disappointment. He says: 'He hit the line the way we wanted but a few little things went against him and, put them together, I think it cost him victory...From the outside barrier he had to go back to the tail and follow Precedence, who was never going to take him into the race. I think if he'd drawn better he wins. He certainly will be better suited over the 2400 metres of the BMW on April 7...'If he draws well there, I think we can ride him midfield and he'll have every chance to win.' Now, what is Hayes really saying? Probably that Americain was set too difficult a task.

Green Moon looks like a coming star of the spring...He produced a wonderful performance to win the Grp 2 Blamey at Flemington. The Lloyd and Nick Williams' owned import has 'spring' written all over him. Nick Williams says: 'He's off to the paddock now with his job for the autumn done...He's a serious Grp 1 horse, as we saw last spring when he was an unlucky second in the Caulfield Cup...I'd be very surprised if he did not end up a serious weight-for-age horse.'
