For how much longer will mighty filly Atlantic Jewel race in Australia? Well, the latest news is that her owners, which include Coolmore Stud and Michael Kirwan, say she will continue to race in Australia...for the time being. MK says: 'She'll be racing in Australia in the spring, but anything is possible after that.'

What happened to well-backed Permit, the big flop in the Sydney Cup? No-one really seems to know 100%. Here's the stewards' report: 'When questioned regarding Permit being retired from the race near the 800m, K McEvoy stated that the gelding travelled well until approaching the 1000m, where it commenced to give ground, despite him riding his mount along. He added that he pulled the gelding up as he felt something was amiss, possibly that it had bled. A post-race veterinary examination of Permit revealed that the gelding cast its off fore plate and there was some sensitivity in that hoof. Trainer Mr C Waller indicated that his intention was to have Permit subjected to a full vet check, including an endoscopic examination, the results of which he will report to the Stewards. He added the only explanation he could offer was that Permit may have suffered low grade cardiac arrhythmia. Stewards advised Mr Waller that Permit must trial to their satisfaction prior to its next start, however, indicated that Permit will be spelled.

The racing future of Americain could be in the balance...Connections are discussing what to do following the French stayer's disappointing performance in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes on Saturday. Jockey Craig Williams told stewards that when Secret Admirer did not go to the fence he was obliged to go one position further back and race on the back of that mare. He then made a long run from the 600m and, although he struck some interference in the straight, the performance nevertheless was somewhat disappointing and, in his opinion, the tactical nature of the race over 2000m was to the disadvantage of Americain. Ms L Jelfs, representing trainer David Hayes, saud the immediate racing future of the horse will be discussed with the connections.
