Meanest act of the year in racing? Surely it must be the $300 fine imposed on Hugh Bowman for touching his cap in honor of racecaller Ian Craig on his last day at Gosford? There was no 'danger' in Bowman's salute to the popular caller as his winning mount crossed the finish line...Are the stewards trying to take all the personal touches out of racing?

A desperate defence of the stewards' decision has come from Racing NSW chief Peter V'Landys. He says stewards still had a 'job to do' and they had acted in the interests of safety. 'We will donate the $300 to Ian's favourite charity,' he says. And so they should! It's still Bowman's contribution and not theirs! A needless expense for the jockey and a bad mark for racing administration.

No surprise that callers have inundated sports radio with complaints about the $300 fine. Racenet reports: A Sydney radio station has been inundated with complaints over Racing NSW stewards' decision to fine jockey Hugh Bowman for his salute to race caller Ian Craig. 'I know the stewards have a job to do but surely they could have turned a blind eye yesterday. They would fair dinkum boo Santa,' a listener wrote in email to Sky Sports Radio...Talkback callers, led by regular contributor Tommy from Campbelltown, also joined in the chorus of disapproval.
