Handicapper strikes...Glencadam Gold has copped a 2kgs penalty for both the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups following his impressive Metropolitan win at Randwick. He now has 53.5kgs in both Cups. It sees him move to equal 21st in the Caulfield Cup Order of Entry before third acceptances are taken at noon tomorrow. He's now 27th in the Melbourne Cup Order of Entry (first acceptances are taken tomorrow). The Gai Waterhouse-trained import, who is now unbeaten in four Australian starts, was originally weighted at 50kg in the Cups before being penalised 1.5kg for his Newcastle Cup (2300m) win on 20 September and a further 2kg following the weekend's feature win in Sydney. Handicapper Greg Carpenter has noted the precedent in recent years for Metropolitan winners. "2kg is the same penalty that I have given to the last three Metropolitan winners in Speed Gifted, Herculian Prince and The Verminator," he says. "Tawqeet was the last horse to win the Metropolitan-Caulfield Cup double in 2006. Tawqeet, like Glencadam Gold was a northern hemisphere four-year-old and was also moved to 53.5kg following his win in the Metropolitan."

Gai Waterhouse's other Grp 1 winner at Randwick on Saturday, Fat Al, has received a 1.5kg penalty in the Melbourne Cup for his front-running Epsom Handicap (1600m) victory. Fat Al, not nominated for the Caulfield Cup, rises from 51kg to 52.5kg in the Melbourne Cup with Greg Carpenter noting that the horse is yet to pass the first elimination clause for the Cup having never won beyond 2000 metres. "Fat Al carried the minimum weight 52kg in the Epsom where he beat Amidexter by a head and the four-year-old moves to 52.5kg in the Melbourne Cup weights as a result of today's penalty," Carpenter said. "Fat Al won the Group 3 Frank Packer Plate over 2000m back in April but has not raced beyond that distance," Carpenter said adding that the last Epsom winner to contest the Melbourne Cup the same year was Super Impose who ran fourth with 60kg in 1991. The winner of Saturday's Listed Bart Cummings (2520m) at Flemington, Tanby, has been penalised 0.5kg in both Cups following his strong staying performance to hold off 2010 Melbourne Cup runner-up Mayluckyday.

It's worth a try...Secret Admirer could become the first horse since Might And Power to finish unplaced in the Epsom Handicap and then win the Caulfield Cup at their next start. Trainer Grahame Begg says SA's 5th placing in the Epsom mile on Saturday was just what he was looking for ahead of the $2.5 million Caulfield feature.
