Star apprentice Chad Schofield will join the David Hayes' team at Euroa in country Victoria on a three-month loan. The 18-year-old, who won the NSW premiership by 15 wins over Sam Clipperton last season, will move within the next fortnight and be available for rides in Victoria from August 21. Let's hope he doesn't watch the video of his dad Glyn's ride on the well-backed Norzita at Warwick Farm on Saturday. It was a shocker - but at least he had the courage to admit it. His decision to seek inside runs on Norzita instead of taking the easy way down the outside cost punters a fortune.
Here comes the country attack...Toowoomba trainer Norm Hilton says he's keen on attacking big Sydney races with Bold Glance - and the #1 target is the Epsom Hdcp 1600m at Randwick in October. BG is off and running with the build-up; he'll run in a Gold Coast barrier trial on Tuesday. Norm says: 'After he won at Doomben I took him out to the farm for a few days to freshen up and he's done really well.' Firstly, Bold Glance is likely to tackle the Grp 2 Warwick Stakes (1400m) at Warwick Farm on Aug 25. The news is not so good for his stablemate Carry Me Bluey. He was scheduled for Melbourne in the spring but an injury has outed him until the end of the year.
On the trail...The Cox Plate dreams for Happy Trails were given a boost with his first-up win in Sat's Grp 3 Spring Stakes (1200m) at Morphettville. Allowed to settle back, Happy Trails sprinted home strongly to reel in recent Flemington winner Gossip Girl and win by a head. Reigning Caulfield Cup winner Southern Speed, positioned near Happy Trails for much of the race, worked home stylishly in the straight, another three quarters of a length back, but was never a threat to the winner. Local trainer Paul Beshara, who bought Happy Trails for just $11,000 at the 2009 Magic Millions Adelaide Yearling Sale, is bullish about his future plans. He says: 'They should watch out in Melbourne because this horse has never been better.'
