Post-Melbourne Cup celebrations for Brett Prebble have thrust Andreas Suborics into the hot seat on the horse to beat in tonight's Fakei Cup at Happy Valley on Medallist.

Connections of Prebble's six scheduled Valley mounts scrambled for replacements yesterday after the jockey requested and was granted the night off to kick his heels up after Green Moon's Melbourne Cup triumph.

Suborics was one of the beneficiaries and the David Hall-trained Medallist gives him a great chance to grab at least one winner on his return from suspension.

The four-year-old showed his share of promise last season, winning at Sha Tin over 1,600m and 1,800m, but now older and stronger and gelded since, Medallist should be capable of even better.

His first run this term put the writing on the wall for an early win, taken back from a wide draw in his first Valley run and hitting the line well to finish third to Mighty K.

The pace looks to be with My Goal, Zachary (Zac Purton) and Flying Unicorn, but Medallist has barrier one and the tactical ability to be box seated or three back on the rail, depending on the intensity of the early speed.

That should ensure he is within striking distance of the leaders when they straighten up and ready to run over the top of them.
