It might have taken Always Something three years to get himself back in the winner's circle, but he can strike while the iron is hot with a light weight and a good draw in the Rotary Centenary Challenge Cup (1,650m) at Happy Valley tonight.

Always Something (Derek Leung Ka-chun) plummets in the weights making the class rise from Class Four to Three and, in a field of rivals who are not particularly going anywhere, that may be enough for success.

He didn't win between November 2009 and his last start on January 30 over this same course and distance, but not because he lost form. In fact, his form was consistent throughout that time and that was probably why he didn't win.

Over that period, the seven-year-old finished more than four lengths from the winner in only four of his 41 starts and finished in the first four placings on 19 occasions.

Few horses deserved to have a few breaks go his way more than Always Something. If Leung can find the right path through the trophy event from his inside barrier and, with a light impost in the saddle, Always Something showed last time that he still has the enthusiasm required.

The speed looks just even, rather than especially quick or slow, with likely frontrunners Flying Unicorn (Umberto Rispoli) and Absolute Fantasy in the outside half of the draw but no other clear pressure on them. That should allow Always Something to land comfortably in midfield, minding his own business until the run from the home turn.
