The draw for any invitation jockeys' series holds the key to finding the winner and few riders in the history of the Longines International Jockeys' Championship have been handed a better line-up than Zac Purton has at his disposal at Happy Valley tonight.
The Australian hasn't quite had the ammunition in recent meetings to continue the brilliant start he made to this term, but with Yuan's Fortune (first leg), All Lucky (second leg), The Untouchablelad (third leg) and Chancellor (fourth leg), he can come roaring back and win the annual Valley feature at his first attempt.
Purton's best rides look to be in the final two legs of the four-race series, but he will be looking to put a score on the board early to take a powerful position in the second half.
Two runs back, Yuan's Fortune just missed at his first attempt at 1,800m but just failed to sustain his finish to the line and failed by a neck. He was better going back to 1,650m last time and a likely good tempo and the "A" course should give a chance to get back in the winner's stall.
Lightly raced All Lucky improved at Sha Tin when stepped up from sprints to a mile last start and he has more upside, but he was able to get forward in a slow tempo there and the speed drawn under him this time means he will need luck to get a sweet run.
Douglas Whyte gets his chance to land a blow on Expectator, wearing blinkers for the first time at his first run for Peter Ho Leung. From the low draw, Whyte will have all the options if the pace is as solid as it promises to be.
Mapping these IJC rides is always tricky with jockeys who are unfamiliar with the running styles of their own rides and rivals, but the pace looks good again in the third leg and that suits The Untouchablelad. Ho has put the blinkers back on the gelding, who showed a return to form was imminent running on behind Jolly Fine last time.
