The overwhelming first impression of the Hong Kong Exchanges Challenge Cup (1,000m) at Happy Valley is of a race stacked with pace and that might open the way for an upset from a horse who is not a genuine leader - Genuine Leader.

It can be fraught with danger going the way of a run-on horse on the A course at the Valley, but a quick speed map sees only two horses in Wednesday night's race who might not be engaged in the pace duel.

From inside to out there is speed, from the likes of Fun 'N' Games(Zac Purton), Sight Believer (Tye Angland) drawn low, to the horses drawn widest, Fantastico (Dicky Lui Cheuk-yin), Peniaphobia and Gold Edition.

It is possible that one or more might elect to opt out of that duel for the front but if the A course is playing its usual style, we will have had a few leaders win by race six and most runners will be wanting to press forward for the bias regardless of the pace.

On paper, the form of Genuine Leader (Karis Teetan) reads poorly, but he has suffered interference more than once lately, as well as two blood in trachea episodes, and those runs have been at Sha Tin on the turf or all-weather, where his form line collectively reads 10 starts for zip.

By contrast, he has excellent Valley form of three wins and four placings from 10 starts over 1,200m, and it is not that great a leap of faith that he can bring his 1,200m form and be effective with a strong speed up front. And throw in that Teetan and trainer Tony Millard are bringing home winners left, right and centre and the six-year-old could be a worthwhile gamble at odds.
