People You Meet

I just took a few minutes off at the races this afternoon to put this up and share it with you.

I always seek out interesting people to talk with. So many punters at the racetrack have stories to tell. Joe is at least 80. Wouldn't tell me how old he is, but I'm sure he's 80 or more.

Been betting for sixty of those years, or more.

He has ONE bet a day. No matter what the weather. One bet. In Sydney. And it is on the first SINGLE horse he comes to that has won its last two starts.

Today he backed Voice Coach in Sydney.

It won, led by half the straight, but of course it was $1.90 top fluctuation. He got $1.95. It paid much less on the TAB. He also says he bets with the bookies because he enjoys the "action".

"Too much action is heart attack territory for me," he told me, "The rest of my time is spent socialising."

I haven't checked the past figures, of course, but it's just one man's way. Wouldn't suit me, or you probably.

But it got me thinking: what price patience, and good old fashioned enjoyment of an afternoon out meeting people?
