Making Money at the Races (6)

Let's have any ideas you come up with about this balance between the careful, safety methods and the risky but tempting alternative approaches.

Using my own research gleaned over many years, the general opinion seems to be that, indeed, a balance is advisable. On average, the balance is felt to be 90 for safety and 10 for risky. However, some serious punters have gone for an 80/20 split. Virtually nobody who has made a lasting success of this game has gone for anything even approaching 50/50.

The test of time is whether you can hold your nerve.

There will be long periods in which the risky aspects return nothing. Hopefully, they will be more than squared by the rarer but happy times when the big payouts come our way. Meanwhile, the requirement for regular, smaller profits from the safety sector is essential. That's to keep the ship afloat, as much as anything!

A nice balance might be distributed this way:

System 1 12.5%

System 2 12.5%

System 3 12.5%

Advisor 1 12.5%

Advisor 2 12.5%

Advisor 3 12.5%

Own views 12.5%

Risky 12.5%

Total Bank 100%

Needless to say you can cut this right back, and limit your bets. That's your choice. But a spread amongst the best methods you know is not a bad idea- and it's a realistic appraisal of what we mostly want out of our day's racing- it's for the average keen punter who wants (a) action and (b) profits.
