CURIOUSER AND CURIOUSER

Well, things are certainly getting that way in Horse Land. The Metropolitan was a demo job for Herculian Prince. The price was astounding. $1.40 last week, more than $5 this past Saturday. I suppose you and I were very right to be wary, but we were told (loudly) that the horse (a) was not himself (that was true, I'd have said he was more like the old moke that used to pull the baker's cart in my earliest memories), and (b) he had bitten, choked, swallowed, and done various awful things to his free-lolling tongue. Horrible to contemplate.

A different horse stepped out on October 2 and made the rest of the field look like the Group Three mob that they in reality were.

The Cups? I don't know. But that kick clear at the 300 was the stuff of absolute top class stayers. Only they possess it.

Curiouser.

I would claim something out of the Epsom. We made the commitment to Trusting and we added "the up and coming Captain Sonador which ran a beauty last weekend.... etc etc". Incidentally the Buccaneer method rated Hidden Wonder second at $151. Close!

Sunday's Turnbull Stakes provided more questions than answers in my diary. I expected Vigor and Dariana to run better races. The latter was wide and that really was a big problem for her. She couldn't overcome it. Vigor seemed to get lost, then buried. The jury's out.

Meanwhile Moudre was balloted out and as a reserve didn't get a run. He must run in the Herbert Power this upcoming weekend. He really needs to win it to be sure of a spot. It's been a topsy-turvy ride for him to qualify. He should have won his last start, but as he didn't we can leave that subject.

Mind you if he brains them on Saturday, well, the party's opened right up again!

A very nice run was that of Faint Perfume. I have her as my toppie for the Flemington November 2 affair, but with the right run she just might blow them away at Caulfield.

Needless to say Shocking is in with a huge show. Shoot Out's going to the Valley. So is Typhoon Tracy.

And so is the old marvel that won. You know who I mean.

But Metal Bender took the eye didn't he?

Gee, I underestimated this fellow.

The trainer's due too. Up and comer, taking trophies home to Sydney from wherever he sets foot... yes, he has to be acknowledged a decent show.

Tough isn't it? It's why I advise you to go carefully.

Sure, have a slap at the exotics. One paid $100,000 last weekend.

Much better if one of us wins it, rather than a fly-by-night three or four days a year punter, agreed?

Just look around at the same time for something easier to invest in, either as well as, or instead of, and keep your Caulfield Cup wagers to small, speculative stuff.

Anyway that's what I'd suggest. But at the same time, don't opt out.

Those exotics will be there for the winning, and you and I know more than the majority about the chances.

The very best of luck (and remember, that will very be largely what it is!).
