BE IT ON YOUR OWN HEAD.

When Black Caviar came out of the 10,000 there were numerous bleats from disgruntled punters.

"We should be given our money back", they wailed.

In the name of fairness, WHY???

When you bet before acceptances, you bet "all in". In exceptional circumstances I've seen the bookmakers refund the cash.

Generous but decent.

This was NOT one of those cases.

Anyone sitting with HAY LIST at seven or eight to one was laughing. What would happen to them?

Deductions?

No.

New book?

You're kidding.

Anyone mad enough to take fives on the fave a fortnight before the event after a hard campaign can hardly grizzle.

The smart bets were on Hay List and Beaded.

Then Hay List came out.

Most bets at that stage were non-refundable. disappointing but understandable, and the the bookies creamed the lot.

Nobody screamed, because that's how the game is played.

And of course Beaded was now the hot favourite, and if you'd bet prepost you were sititng on a great result, which you achieved.

It's what the prepost pool is all about, and it's why you ONLY bet on longer priced horses that way.

Anything else is sheer madness.
