He knows how good his Cathay Pacific Futurity Stakes contender All Too Hard is but co-trainer Wayne Hawkes will be keeping a keen eye on Saturday's Carlton Draught Peter Young Stakes at Caulfield, to see how his vanquished foes of two weeks ago, fare earlier in the day.

Orr Stakes placegetters Mawingo and Mr Moet, are stepping up in distance in the Young Stakes and Hawkes is keen to see them run well to frank the form from All Too Hard's Orr win.

''Freedman's horse could come out and win on Saturday and then win the Australian Cup, which franks our first up win and that would not surprise me, because I think he (Mawingo) is a pretty good horse,'' Hawkes said.

Hawkes said that All Too Hard had been ticking over nicely since the Orr Stakes and had improved but queried how much.

''He's good and has come on since the first up run but that was in a Group 1 weight-for-age race so how much are you going to improve?''

While All Too Hard is not taking on Mawingo and Mr Moet, Hawkes is certainly not treating the Futurity as a foregone conclusion.

''King Mufhasa has won the race before and will be fitter, while Green Moon is a top class stayer and won first up last Autumn.''

''Those better stayers invariably run well fresh so it wouldn't surprise to see him hitting the line strongly.''

From barrier three, Hawkes sees All Too Hard settling in the box seat, just in behind the speed and he is hopeful that something will take up the challenge to the likely leader King Mufhasa.

''If Glass Harmonium steps away cleanly he could be up there because he can get a bit revvy.''

''It would suit me just fine to have to have King Mufhasa and Glass Harmonium tearing at each other in front.''

From The Futurity, Hawkes said the Australian Guineas was a definite possibility but a start in that race will depend on how All To Hard goes on Saturday, as well as how he comes through the race.

''You just let him tell us where he's going, because there are 100 races you can run a horse like him in.''

''You only do it (a seven day back up) if you think they can cope with it but to win a group one Guineas in the Spring and then the Autumn would be a great feat.''

Since the Australian Guineas was instituted in 1986, the Lee Freedman trained Mahogany is the only horse that has been able to take out the double.

Hawkes did give a word of warning to potential Guineas rivals if All too Hard does back up in the race.

''If he does back up then you know he's flying.''

''When John Hawkes backs them up week to week I reckon he's got a massive strike rate.''

As far as a mooted overseas campaign is concerned, Hawkes says a trip to Dubai is definitely out because All Too Hard was not inoculated last week but all other options were still open.

In the TAB Futurity Stakes market, All Too Hard is the $1.70 favourite ahead of King Mufhasa at $4.60 and Green Moon at $8.
