THE "tradesman-like" win in yesterday's $100,000 Goldmarket has set up Captain Sonador for a host of upcoming big race targets, including a Stradbroke Handicap swansong this year, reports the Courier-Mail in Brisbane.
It says: Owner Greg Wagner is adamant the son of Shamardal will retire to stud at the end of the season but not before he takes on the Magic Millions carnival, a Doncaster tilt and finally the Queensland winter carnival.
Jockey Glen Boss positioned the Epsom Handicap winner closer to the speed than usual and his class shone in running down outsider Steel Lips to win by one length, with former Golden Slipper winner Phelan Ready running solidly for third.
Boss said he always planned to be a little closer to the leader.
"I was a bit more aggressive with him because I didn't think there was much speed and didn't want Chris (Munce on Zero Rock) to get a soft lead," Boss said. "He doesn't like to be forced there but he was the best horse in the race and I rode him accordingly. It wasn't dominant, it was tradesman-like. I think if he's ridden a bit more quietly, he's more explosive. He had 60 kilos and he was first-up over 1300m, so he's got more improvement."
