SYDNEY TURF CLUB chief executive Michael Kenny is confident night racing at Canterbury can be moved to Fridays in the new year, pending an agreement with the NSW Harness Racing Club, reports the Sydney Morning Herald.

It says: The first night-time race meeting of the Sydney season will be held at Canterbury tomorrow and Kenny said another meeting in two weeks would also be held on the usual Thursday night timeslot.

However, Melbourne stages Moonee Valley night meetings on Fridays, which coincide with Singapore meetings, and Kenny said the STC had requested a trial of Friday night racing in Sydney with the NSWHRC.

''Through Racing NSW we've asked the NSWHRC to consider a trial of Friday night racing this season,'' Kenny said yesterday, heartened by NSWHRC chief executive John Dumesny's prediction that night racing at Menangle could move to Saturday next year.

''We are hopeful of getting approval from the NSWHRC to have Friday night meetings at Canterbury in January and February. I believe the NSWHRC is going to consider the situation this week and we are hopeful of getting their support.

''From an industry viewpoint, the potential of additional turnover would benefit everyone.''

Kenny said Racing NSW chief executive Peter V'landys was playing a part in the negotiations.

''He knows a bit about the agreement given he played a part in it when he was in charge of the NSWHRC,'' Kenny said.
