THERE are no group races at Caulfield on Saturday, but the winners of the two best juvenile races in the country last season, the colt Star Witness and flying filly Crystal Lily, kick off what could be career-defining campaigns, reports The Age.

It says: That is certainly the case for Blue Diamond Stakes winner Star Witness, who will have just three runs in Melbourne over the next six weeks - starting with Saturday's 1200-metre listed Wellington Stakes - before being aimed at the group 1 sprints at Royal Ascot in England in June.

Trainer and part-owner Danny O'Brien said yesterday that the colt, who was runner-up behind the unbeaten Black Caviar at his most recent run in the group 1 Patinack Farm Classic at Flemington on the final day of the spring carnival, is in perfect condition for a winning return.

''He's going super - every bit as well as he's ever gone and with a colt like him with such enormous stallion potential, you want to be winning every time you go to the track,'' he said. ''He trialled very well on Friday and his jockey Steven Arnold gave rave reviews about him so we're expecting him to hit the ground running on Saturday.''

O'Brien has mapped out a three-race autumn campaign - that ends with the $750,000 group 1 1600-metre Australian Guineas on March 5 - after deciding against another clash with Black Caviar in the group 1 sprints.

''We've had our hand forced by Black Caviar to take on this campaign but he's always indicated he will run out a strong mile,'' O'Brien said. ''The campaign should fit in well with our plans for Royal Ascot as he can have a break after the Guineas and have plenty of time to be readied for his trip.''
