Solzhenitsyn cemented Robert Heathcote's best day at the races with victory in Saturday's $400,000 Group 1 Toorak Handicap (1600m).

The former Kiwi provided Queensland's premier trainer with his second Group 1 success, following Woorim's Oakleigh Plate win - also at Caulfield - in February, when he stormed to victory in the prestigious mile.

The triumph came just over an hour after stable star Buffering won the $220,000 Group 2 Schillaci Stakes and just 10 minutes after Funtantes streeted his rivals in Brisbane.

"What a thrill," Heathcote said. "A Group 2 and now Group 1 number two. This is just awesome.

"The first day I started him he flew home from last and ran fourth and I said to the boys that this is a horse that will be on the front page of the papers one day,"

The six-year-old lived up to the boom when he powered to a strong win. The son of St Petersburg enjoyed a dream run midfield and although under pressure from the 600m to the 300m, he lengthened impressively in the straight to reel in the leaders.

Solzhenitsyn, who started at $5, scored by a long neck - coincidentally, the fourth year in a row the Toorak winning margin has been a long neck - from the Aaron Purcell-trained Spirit Song ($21) with another Victorian mare Yosei ($14) the same distance back third.

Champion Sydney mare More Joyous, who was aiming to break her own Toorak weight-carrying record with 60kg, found the impost too much after having to work hard to find the spot outside the leader.

"Once we posted the old mare (More Joyous) three wide down the back I knew I had him (Nash Rawiller) covered because I knew he was going to have to burn a lot of petrol with the big weight to get home," Solzhenitsyn's jockey Corey Brown said.

"I got all the breaks, had no weight on my back and it's good to be back in the winner's circle."

Nash Rawiller, who rode More Joyous, said the eight-time Group 1 winner ran well given the circumstances.

"When the pace come off I was forced to go around them and sit outside the lead, which she can normally overcome quite easily, but it was pretty testing out there with the big weight, especially when you're giving them eight kilos," he said. "I was more than happy with the run."
