SNIPER'S Bullet became the first interstate raider to win WA's premier race for a decade when he blitzed a quality field to take out the $1 million Railway Stakes at Ascot yesterday, reports the Melbourne Sunday Herald Sun.
It says: Last year's runner-up made amends for the near miss and won his first race for more than two years after scoring by a length from local hopes Tarzi and Colour Correct.
Nash Rawiller had Sniper's Bullet up on the speed with Keytomoney after jumping from a wide gate and the former Stradbroke Handicap winner still had plenty in the tank down the straight.
NSW trainer Tracey Bartley was ecstatic after breaking a long drought.
"He just tries his guts out for us," Bartley said of the six-year-old, who took his earnings to more than $2 million. I did say (to Rawiller) if we got to the 600m mark just take off and let them chase us. To come from Mudgee in NSW and win the greatest mile in Australian turf is outstanding. We worked hard for this one and let's hope it's not 2 1/2 years before another one."
Rawiller said he was confident of finding a handy position despite jumping from barrier 14.
"(Bartley) wanted me to go out and grab the race by the scruff of the neck and that's what we did and the best horse won," he said. "This is what racing's all about. I came over here today with one ride and we got the win."
