SHE might have only finished third, beaten 3¥ lengths, but Jolie's Shinju's connections were looking forward to the Cox Plate with some confidence after the Singapore mare showed she will be competitive with Australia's best weight-for-age performers in yesterday's Dato' Tan Chin Nam Stakes (1600 metres) at Moonee Valley, reports the Sunday Age.
It says: Jockey Ronnie Stewart was able to dictate terms in front but the mare could not match the finishing sprint of Whobegotyou and Mic Mac, who drew well clear over the final stages. Jolie's Shinju's owner Dr Tan Kai Chah said he was as happy as he could be without winning the race.
''Our target is the Cox Plate and I think all of us have to be satisfied. Everyone likes to win but I think we all have to be realistic,'' he said. ''She will improve by a few lengths with the experience. Now we know that she will match up with the best horses in Australia. Now we know she is competitive and that is what we were here to find out today.''
