IF PRE-POST betting agencies around Australia are the litmus test to the outcome of the much-vaunted match race between Hay List and Black Caviar in today's $750,000 group 1 Patinack Farm Classic at Flemington, Black Caviar seems assured of keeping her unbeaten record intact, reports The Age.

It says: Bookmakers and TAB sports-betting agencies said last night that it was ''one-way traffic'', with hundreds of thousands of dollars pouring in for Black Caviar, leaving Hay List friendless.

Despite Racing Victoria stewards giving Hay List a clean bill of health at an inspection early yesterday morning, punters have still preferred the Peter Moody-trained mare.

Some betting outlets bet as much as $1.90 about Black Caviar winning, but that price was soon taken and markets now have the four-year-old mare as short as a $1.65.

Both TAB Sportsbet and the bookmaking firm of Betstar were astounded at the flow of money for Black Caviar. ''It seemed every second punter just wanted to back Black Caviar. All day its price firmed and you look at a horse like Hay List, who's on the threshold of international sprinting fame, no one seems to want him at $3.40,'' Betstar manager Michael Horne said.

''It seems as though since I opened betting they just want to go the one way. We were quite open-minded when we put the prices up but we never believed that they would get this far apart so early in betting.''

However, jockey Glyn Schofield is confident his mount, Hay List, can foil such a betting plunge
