The Con Karakatsanis-trained News Alert will be out to prove he's one of Sydney's best sprinters in tonight's listed Canterbury BMW Classic, reports the Sydney Morning Herald.
It says: A minor heel problem forced the five-year-old to be scratched at the barriers when favourite in the Carrington Stakes on New Year's Day, but Karakatsanis said the gelding had overcome the ailment and was ready to make amends at Canterbury.
''This is a great opportunity for him to prove he is among the best sprinters in Sydney,'' Karakatsanis said. ''He has drawn well and has worked great since the other day, which was just one of those things.
''He struck himself in a tender spot on the heel on the way to the barrier, and Jim Cassidy, who has ridden him since he was a two-year-old, could just tell there was something wrong. He's always had a choppy action but he just wasn't himself. It wasn't that serious but it was enough to put him out of that race, and Jim did the right thing by me and the owners by getting him vetted.''
News Alert missed a couple of days' work after the Carrington but has pleased his trainer on the track despite coming to the end of a long preparation. Hugh Bowman takes over from the suspended Cassidy tonight.
