JUST 13 months after having his first runner as an owner, Lawrence Eales is in line for another big pay day if his Street Cry colt Shocking wins tomorrow's group 1 Queensland Derby at Eagle Farm, reports The Age newspaper.

It says: Eales, who shot to fame and furthered his fortune when another Street Cry youngster, Whobegotyou, claimed the $1 million Caulfield Guineas last October, stands to reap a multimillion-dollar reward if Shocking can claim the final classic for the season.

The Queenslander, who made his money in earth-moving equipment, last week spent $13,750 to have Shocking included in the Derby line-up as a late entry, but that outlay looks a good bet against what he could earn with a win in the $500,000 2400-metre feature.

Apart from the race's $320,000 first prizemoney, Shocking's value as a stallion would skyrocket to at least $1 million and the value of his dam would also increase many times over.

Eales sought out Shocking's dam, Maria Di Castiglia, who is by Danehill, after he had bought Shocking for $64,000 at the Queensland horses-in-training sale.

After Shocking had impressed at his first few gallops, Eales bought her for an undisclosed amount, believed to be about $20,000. She would be worth easily 10 times that with a group 1 winner as a son.

Eales was lamenting the fact he did not buy Whobegotyou's mother, Temple Of Peace, after Whobegotyou won his second race at Moonee Valley on June 21 last year. Temple Of Peace was instead bought by Emerald Thoroughbreds for $5250.

Eales said yesterday that Maria Di Castiglia was in foal to Kentucky Derby winner Street Sense, with the foal to be a three-quarter brother to Shocking. Her dam, Macrina Pompea, was a listed winner who won up to 2400 metres in Europe.
