NEARLY 12 months ago to the day, Kerrin McEvoy left the Sandown quarantine centre with a confident smile on his face having partnered Godolphin's spring carnival raider All The Good in a stirring gallop, reports The Age.

It says: That weekend, McEvoy and All The Good recorded a famous victory at Caulfield, McEvoy's first win in the Caulfield Cup and Godolphin's long-awaited maiden group 1 triumph in Australia. Yesterday, McEvoy emerged from the quarantine centre with a similar feeling to last year, after taking Godolphin's latest headline tourist, Kirklees, for his final spin before Saturday.

Kirklees and travelling partner Crime Scene had their strongest work since arriving in Melbourne on September 25 as they galloped together over 1400 metres in a tick over one minute, 30 seconds, running the last 400 metres in 24.66 seconds with Kirklees clearly ascendant at the finish post.

''It was nice work, we quickened home over the last furlong and a half but we certainly weren't out to break any records,'' McEvoy said. ''I'm just as confident [as I was last year] and we go there on Saturday with a winning chance.''

The jockey's thoughts were echoed by Godolphin travelling foreman Tommy Strang, who said Kirklees seems relaxed and comfortable at Sandown, perhaps even more so than at Godolphin's base in Newmarket.
