TRAINER Mark Kavanagh has Victoria's two major summer sprint races at his mercy after landing the quinella with rejuvenated horses in the Doveton Stakes at Caulfield on Saturday, reports the Sunday Age.
It says: Kavanagh said he was not only pleased with the return to form of Catapulted, which won, he was also buoyed by the display of Undeniably, which ran home powerfully to finish second. Kavanagh was lavish in his praise of the sprinters and said they had tough constitutions.
''Catapulted has been a marvellous old sprinter,'' he said. ''He's mixed with the best, he's come up every year and he always gives everything to you. 'He had a big weight today but whatever he's done, he's done well, and it looks like we'll have another good summer with him - and the bonus is that we've got Undeniably going well, too.
''He's been a long time coming back [Undeniably], he copped an infection two years ago and he was a very sick horse for a long time.''
Undeniably, a six-year-old son of Fastnet Rock, showed a great deal of early promise. Kavanagh said the two major races during the summer, the Christmas Handicap at Caulfield on Boxing Day and the Standish Handicap at Flemington on New Year's Day, would be the target for the pair. Catapult's previous win was in the 2012 Standish.
''I'll just have a good look at things,'' Kavanagh said. ''I won't have them clash - one will go one way and one will go the other.''
