Boom apprentice Jackie Beriman made the most of a call-up to ride Rowland in the $80,000 RSL Handicap that kicked off today's Caulfield card, partnering the gelding to a milestone victory.

It was the first Saturday city success for the Warrnambool hoop, who had ridden two previous metropolitan winners but both at midweek fixtures.

Beriman was originally going to be kept away from city venues until next year to protect her claim, but came to town to retain her association with Princess Diablo and was snapped up by Laing.

"Originally I was riding just Princess Diablo for Merv McKenzie, who I've ridden before, but Robbie rang and said that he wanted me for a couple and that's how it occurred, so thanks to Robbie," she said.

"You definitely got to take them when you can."

Beriman provided a fine example of why good judges are singing her praises when she guided Rowland to the fifth win of his 55-start career and first victory since a Sandown victory in June 2010.

After settling in the second half of the field on the fence, Beriman improved along the rail rounding the bend and steadily made ground early in the straight before exploding through a gap at the 100m.

The son of Lonhro, who was well supported to start at $7, surged away to score by 1-3/4 lengths from David Hayes-trained import Budai ($41) with Ourforeignminister ($6.50) a half-length back in third.

Laing, who also had a winner at Sportingbet Park (Sandown) on Wednesday, paid tribute to Beriman after the race.

"She got him to begin pretty good, she took up a good spot and just had to be a bit patient, but he hit the line good," the trainer said.
