TRAINER Pat Hyland confirmed plans for a tilt at the $750,000 group 1 Australian Guineas (1600 metres) at Flemington on Saturday week for progressive colt Shanghai Warrior after he scored a tough win in the Cove Hotel Handicap at Sandown yesterday, reports The Age.
It adds: ''I've got a pretty good opinion of this horse and I think he's going to make a nice spring horse,'' he said.
Shanghai Warrior, a big drifter in betting from $2.80 to start the $3.60 favourite, began well and jockey Steven Arnold was able to position him perfectly on the rails behind leader Chamandi. Arnold waited patiently in the straight before asking Shanghai Warrior for his effort, and the horse showed plenty of determination over the final 100 metres to grab Rock Hit ($9) and win by a half-neck, with Gogonski ($7) a head away third.
''What's in the Guineas? Helmet and Mosheen went ordinary the other day and it's a big money race,'' Hyland said. ''What happens if they all drop away? We might just have a crack at them and then put him away.''
