IT IS 20 years since David Hayes has been involved in a Railway Stakes win, but Better Loosen Up's victory in 1989 has him cautiously optimistic about All American's chances in Perth's premier race on Saturday, reports the Sydney Morning Herald.

It says: Hayes said yesterday he was thrilled with the way Australia's newest group 1 winner had settled in just a week after arriving in Perth, but experience told him the $1 million race at Ascot is not easy to win.

Hayes's Lindsay Park recorded its sole Railway Stakes victory when Better Loosen Up flew home to score in what was a preview of how he would dominate racing in the following 18 months. Notably, no winner since has bettered the 55.5 kilograms (on a 49 minimum) that Better Loosen Up lumped that day.

All American has 56 kilos (on a 50 minimum) following his upset win in the group 1 Emirates Stakes on the final day of the Flemington carnival.

All American and stablemate Largo Lad will have 14 rivals on Saturday, including fellow eastern states-trained horses Ortensia, Sniper's Bullet and Gold Salute, following yesterday's final declarations.

''He's settled in really well and looks to have gone on from his Emirates win, and that is the path that Better Loosen Up took,'' Hayes said.
