The Mark Kavanagh-trained December Draw will be aiming to make it back-to-back Turnbull Stakes (2000m) victories at Flemington on Saturday with the seven-year-old headlining a stellar list of 19 nominations for the $500,000 feature.
The imported galloper, who has spent much of the past 12 months sidelined through injury, heads into the Turnbull third-up after an impressive third placing behind Ocean Park in the Group 1 Hyland Race Colours Underwood Stakes (1800m) at Caulfield on 22 September.
A breakthrough Group 1 winner in last year's Turnbull Stakes, December Draw was seriously injured in the 2011 BMW Caulfield Cup (2400m) at his subsequent start and was sent to the spelling paddock.
Underwood Stakes runner-up, the Peter Moody-trained Italian import Voila Ici, is also among the Turnbull nominations as is 2011 Caulfield Cup-winning mare Southern Speed, who was an eye-catching fourth in the Underwood.
Trainer Robert Hickmott holds three nominations for the race with Green Moon, Mourayan and Seville; Team Hawkes have nominated both Maluckyday and Niwot while Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes winner Happy Trails, Linton, Rekindled Interest and four-year-old Ethiopia are also nominated.
Warrnambool trainer Ciaron Maher has 2010 Queen Elizabeth Stakes winner Moudre entered for the Turnbull - a race that offers the winner a ballot exemption in the Caulfield Cup.
Weighted at 52.5kg, Moudre currently sits equal 33rd on the Caulfield Cup Order of Entry and thus needs a win on Saturday to guarantee a start in the $2.5m feature on 20 October.
Among Saturday's co-features is the Group 2 $220,000 Gilgai Stakes (1200m) in which the Jason Warren-trained Bel Sprinter will continue his march towards the Group 1 sprints during the Spring Racing Carnival.
Others among the 12 entries for the Gilgai are Peter Moody's mares Mid Summer Music and King's Rose, the Tony Gollan-trained Spirit of Boom, fellow Queenslander Excellantes and Atomic Force.
A total of 25 horses have been nominated for the Listed Bart Cummings (2520m) with all bar the Tony McEvoy-trained Sky Raider still holding a nomination for the Emirates Melbourne Cup (3200m).
Robert Hickmott has nominated five horses in Efficient, Midas Touch, Tanby, Seville and Excluded; Team Hawkes have entered Maluckyday and Niwot for The Bart Cummings as well as the Turnbull, while in-form staying mare Exceptionally is also among the nominations.
In the Group 2 $220,000 Blazer Stakes (1410m) for the for the mares, Mosheen will be looking to get her spring campaign back on track against a high quality list of 25 nominations that includes Soft Sand, Celebrity Girl, Hurtle Myrtle, Gai's Choice, Hi Belle and Shopaholic.
Both the Schweppes Thousand Guineas (1600m) and Crown Oaks (2500m) pictures could become a little clearer after the running of Saturday's Group 2 $220,000 Edward Manifold Stakes (1610m) for the three-year-old fillies.
Atlantic Jewel's three-quarter sister Commanding Jewel headlines 23 nominations including her last start conqueror Lady of Harrods as well as the Melbourne Racing Club members-owned filly Members Joy.
Another feature on the all black-type program is the Listed $120,000 Herald Sun SuperRacing Stakes (1000m) - the first two-year-old race of the season - with premier trainers Moody, Hawkes, Gai Waterhouse, Mick Price, Peter Snowden and David Hayes amongst those represented.
