The Mick Price trained Callanish kept his unbeaten record intact with a determined victory in the Listed Darley Seymour Cup (1600m).

Coming into the race on the back of seven straight victories, including an impressive last start four length romp at Caulfield over subsequent Toorak Handicap runner-up Spirit Song and Cranbourne Cup winner Midnight Martini, Callanish was expected to face his toughest test yet today.

Drawn in the outside gate of the ten horse field, jockey Dale Smith who has partnered Callanish at all seven of the horses wins so far sent the son of Fastnet Rock straight to the front where he remained throughout.

Clearly overjoyed by the win, Smith paid tribute to the horses fighting qualities.

"He was actually a bit sluggish away today which is normally not like him," Smith said.

"He gave me a lot when I asked for him, he really digs deep and that's the best thing about this horse if he does lack anything in ability he makes it up in heart.

"We've seen it for the last seven starts that when it comes down to a dog fight he just loves it, grits his teeth and has a red-hot crack."

Sent around the $2.30 favourite, Callanish had half a length to spare at the post from Over Quota ($15) who tried hard to reel in the winner in the straight with the Gai Waterhouse trained Tribal Rock ($10) just behind in third.

Callanish's part-owner Rob Harding described the win as a "gold letter day" before paying tribute to both the horse's jockey and trainer and even mentioning he may be on a Doncaster Handicap path in the autumn.

"I've been a part of the Price stable for twenty years now and it's a gold letter day for all of us that have been involved in the stable, it's just great," Harding said.

"Apparently you need to run 2000 metres to win a Doncaster but after today's win it might be on the agenda, it's up to Mick to make those decisions. (www.racingvictoria.net.au)
