COREY BROWN left Randwick with a smile on his face after riding a treble yesterday but leading apprentice Tommy Berry's double was not all good news, reports the Sydney Morning Herald.

Its report adds: Berry opened the Kensington track program with a win on Eight Thorns, and his second winner El Zegri meant the end of his two-kilogram claim.

''I knew it was coming up, and I didn't really want to look at my book, but that was it - I'm down to [claiming] 1¢ kilograms now,'' Berry said. ''I have been on a bit of a roll, and hopefully the trainers will stick with me even now the claim isn't as much. Generally, if you're riding winners, you keep getting rides.''

Berry extended his advantage in the Sydney apprentices' premiership to six from Brenton Avdulla, while Brown has a nine-win advantage in the senior jockeys' title over Nash Rawiller, who scored on smart two-year-old Decision Time yesterday.

Brown won on Readiness but was $300 lighter in the pocket after hitting the Gwenda Markwell-trained four-year-old once too often before the 100-metre mark. He then teamed with trainer John O'Shea to win with with Kiss 'n Chase and the promising St Augustine later in the day.

St Augustine, beaten as a $1.40 favourite when resuming a month ago, was unwanted in betting yesterday, drifting from $1.70 to $2.50, but scored a commanding win. The Anabaa colt will be aimed at the autumn carnival after scoring by 4¢ lengths. ''We brought him here a bit soft first-up and ran into two that can really gallop [Key West and Samui Lad],'' O'Shea said. ''It's good to get that first [win] away.

''We are taking him along slowly, and hopefully he can measure up to a listed race during the carnival.''
