GLEN Boss, one of Australia's leading jockeys, is poised to return to racing after his surgeon yesterday cleared him to start riding trackwork in the first week of January, reports The Age.

It says: Boss suffered serious damage to his arm after a fall at Flemington in September, requiring extensive surgery.

"I smashed my humerus bone pretty well, the X-ray didn't look good but when the surgeon went in he said it looked a lot worse and there were fragments basically everywhere," Boss said. "They had to put a pretty big plate in there and 10 screws to keep it all together, but now my medical advice is to jump on a horse in early January and see how I feel. If that's all OK and things seem good I will be back riding in the second or third week of the month.''

In the incident, Boss's mount Crystal Lily had a massive heart attack during a low-key barrier trial at Flemington. Crystal Lily died after the fall.

"We had gone about 500 metres and I thought something might have galloped on me from behind because her back leg went a bit funny, so I looked around and there was nothing behind me, and as I am looking back she started to get out of control, obviously she was dying'' he said. (www.theage.com.au)
