FEARLESS jumper Black And Bent has achieved many firsts during his remarkable career, both on the flat and over hurdles, but in South Australia tomorrow he could eclipse a record that has stood for nearly 40 years, reports The Age.

It says: Noted for his versatility and courage, Black And Bent will only be tackling an average jumps race at Morphettville, but he will face a hurdle that no horse since metric measures were introduced in 1972 has managed to overcome.

Black And Bent will have to lug 73.5 kilograms, and at the same time concede up to 9.5 kilograms to some of his rivals in the 3100-metre race. If any jumper is to shatter the weight-carrying record, it would seem Black And Bent would be the most likely.

At his last start at Flemington, he raced away to win the VRC Stayers' Final over 2500 metres, underlining the five-year-old's ability to successfully mix jumping and flat racing. He has an impressive record over jumps, even though he incurred a bowed tendon last year.

''He's got a huge weight, but it's a weight he fully deserved,'' trainer Robert Smerdon said yesterday. ''He's strong and he's very honest ... [but] he's got the job ahead.''
