AUSTRALIA'S living turf legend Bart Cummings has called for the Moonee Valley Racing Club committee to be sacked and reaffirmed his belief the Cox Plate should be moved to Flemington, reports The Age.
It says: Cummings also said the club should be merged with the Victoria Racing Club and claimed the proposed redevelopment of Moonee Valley was a smokescreen to stave off a merger.
''I was asked by some administrators about 12 years ago what I thought would be the best outcome for Moonee Valley, I told them it was simple, move the Cox Plate to Flemington and merge the two clubs together,'' he told The Age. ''That was the only way to go. They are now trying to build this, pull this down, sell that, and keep this. In all my years in racing I have never seen more of a mess.''
Just 12 months ago, former Racing Victoria Ltd board member Lindsay Maxsted released a report, commissioned by the three metropolitan clubs, into the future structure of racing in Victoria. The report said a merger between Moonee Valley and the Victoria Racing Club (Flemington) was vital for the future growth of racing in this state. The move was supported by Racing Minister Rob Hulls, who claimed racing was losing a fortune through duplicated administration costs.
