The Caulfield Cup picture changed dramatically this morning when many of the leading contenders for the $2.5 million Group 1 drew horror barriers.

None fared worse than the two favourites, Glencadam Gold and Dunaden, who will start from the widest starting positions in the field of 18 and four emergencies.

Barry Pang, part-owner of pre-draw favourite, plucked the miniature Caulfield Cup with 21 stuck underneath, while Geoffrey Fabre, representative for Dunaden, fared even worse for the reigning Melbourne Cup winner.

Barriers four, 19 and 22 were left when Dunaden's name was drawn and Fabre selected 22.

"Ideally we wanted between six and 11, buried in mid-division, and we'll still try and do the same but it's just going to be very hard from out there," Fabre said.

"At least we've got two speed horses inside us that we can follow through, so we haven't given up at all.

"We've got the right horse, we haven't got the right gate, but he'll be doing his best."

Dunaden will be striving to become the first horse since Lord Reims in 1987 to win from the outside barrier, while no winner has started from 17 since Let's Elope in 1991.

Pang said the Metropolitan Handicap winner's alley was far from ideal but remains confident given the Gai Waterhouse-trained import will race forward and he wasn't the only leading contender to draw wide.

Americain, the 2010 Melbourne Cup champion, drew 19 (will start from 16 if the emergencies don't start), Peter Moody-trained on-pacer Voila Ici drew 17 (15) and defending champion Southern Speed was handed 14 (13).

"Basically we're fortunate in that most of the fancied horses are drawn outside like us as well," Pang said.

"The way he races, because he jumps well and he jumps to the lead, basically we'll be up there on the pace. Basically we just hope that we stay out of trouble out there."

A $3.60 chance before the draw, Glencadam Gold is out to $4.20 with the TAB while Dunaden, who had met with heavy support in the past few days, is at $7.50.

Dunaden shares the second line with last year's beaten favourite December Draw, who drew barrier 12, while one of the big winners was Lights Of Heaven, stablemate of $21 chance Voila Ici, who is into $11 after drawing gate eight.

Zabeelionaire ($26) drew the inside alley - a position that hasn't provided the Caulfield Cup winner since 1941 - while the Luca Cumani-trained My Quest For Peace (two, $15), Bart Cummings-prepared import Sanagas (three, $41), Naturalism Stakes winner Folding Gear (four, $16), Moudre (five, $51), Niwot (six, $31) and Alcopop (nine, $18) were the others to fare well.

Of the remainder, Marco Botti-trained Jakkalberry ($18) drew 13, former American Winchester ($35) 16, Secret Admirer ($26) 11 and Sneak A Peak ($16) 10.

The four emergencies are Sabrage (20), Gatewood (18), Ibicenco (15) and Fictional Account (seven).
