Melbourne’s leading metropolitan trainer, Darren Weir, is planning another Tasmanian visit. Over the last six or seven years Weir has had considerable success during the Tasmanian summer carnival, winning both the Hobart and Launceston Cups.

His progressive stayer, Prince Of Penzance, will first tackle this Saturday’s Listed $120,000 Mornington Cup Prelude (2000m) at Caulfield.

“I want to run him in this race on Saturday, and then possibly take him down for the Launceston Cup,” Weir told Racing Network today.

“The Hobart Cup will come along too quickly for him, but the timing is right for the Launceston Cup,” he said.

Weir said he felt the Mornington track was probably not the right course for Prince Of Penzance.

“He’s a big horse who gets back and has a long stride, so it’s probably not the right place for him,” Weir said.

“At this stage he’s a progressive young stayer, but how far he goes only time will tell,” he added.

Weir is enjoying a breakout season with 32 wins, leading the Melbourne Trainers Premiership by 10 from Peter Moody, who has won the past four years. (www.racingnetwork.com.au)
