How long before someone in authority realises the basic insanity behind the new whip rules? Word is out that changes are likely to bring Australian rules more into line with those in NZ. Latest victim is Daniel Ganderton. The former Tasmanian star rode vigorously -- in the traditional Aussie style -- to get Deer Valley home narrowly in a photo finish after a head and head duel with the fav Melito in the last 200m of the final race at Rosehill. And what did he get for his winning ride? He got PUNISHED! Ganderton pleaded guilty to a charge of having used the whip on five additional occasions to that permitted under the new rules. What would have happened if he'd followed the rules? Most likely Deer Valley would have lost.

Daniel Ganderton was penalised and suspended because of the new whip rules. The stewards ruled that Ganderton will forfeit his riding fee and prizemoney percentage from the Silver Shadow first prize of $75,000 and also suspended him for six meetings. His suspension will begin on August 26 and expire on September 5.
