One of the toughest parts of punting is to hold steady after a body blow or three during an afternoons punting. On Saturday I did not have a bet until Race 5 at Rosehill when I was fortunate enough to score $6.20 on All Silent AND lay the favourite Northern Meteor as well. It wasn't until just over 4 hours later when I backed my next winner, Tarzi, all the way over in Perth. In between I laid Theseo only to see him hold off Viewed, whom I backed, in the Ranvet but the real kidney punch came when I backed Culminate in the Coolmore Classic at 29/1 on Betfair. At the 300m mark I held my breath as I felt Typhoon Tracey was beaten only to see the grey Chinchilla Rose emerge as a threat. Alas, G Boss realised more than I could see and he steadied TT, got her onto her Sydney leg and up she gets in an absolutely sensational effort for a filly having only her 5th race start. Bye, bye, nice dollars!
For the next couple of hours I started digging a metaphorical hole and finally the last race on my agenda loomed and a nice little loss was on the horizon if I didn't come good. I had stressed that I thought Marasco was a fraction suspect 1st up to one of my punting mates and dug deep and laid him plus bet on Tarzi and Hadabeclorka. At the time of the race I was sitting on the banks of the Yarra opposite the huge ferris wheel on the city side as I was on my way to my daughters rowing club for a trivia night. All I could focus on was the commentators comments that Marasco was in trouble, still can't get out and finally the most beautiful words Tarzi wins. (I just had a look at the replay and Marasco should have won: there is no doubt about that at all). Aah! The fickle finger of fate.In the finish I nudged ahead for the day but I was lucky or was I? Who knows but my day once again proved that whatever your strategy you must stick with it. That is the way of the punt.
I would be forgiving with Zagreb and El Cambio: both seemed to struggle in the damp conditions. They are better than Saturdays runs. Hard not to be impressed with All Silent and what a run by Whobegotyou (pity he cannot race more handy because he would kill them) on their way to the Doncaster and Viewed and Moatize (great Sydney Cup run) both look great chances to add to the Bart Cummings Group 1 tally in the Sydney Cup and even perhaps in the BMW as well.
