Protectionist landed some handy collects for TAB customers with his dynamic victory in the Melbourne Cup at Flemington.
The German-trained stayer raced right away with Australia's famous race over the concluding stages, recording an emphatic win over war-horse Red Cadeaux, with Who Shot Thebarman winding up third. Lexus winner Signoff rounded out the top four.
Protectionist started at $8.50 with TAB Fixed Odds and was one of the more popular runners in the market along with race favourite Admire Rakti, Lucia Valentina, Mutual Regard and Signoff.
Biggest bets on the winner were $10,000 @ $8 and $9,000 @ $7.50, the latter being one of the first, if not the first, bet taken on the Cup after Saturday’s barrier draw.

One TAB customer will be anxiously awaiting the result of Thursday’s Crown Oaks after Protectionist completed the third leg of a Fixed Odds four-leg Multi.
They need Fontein Ruby to win the Oaks for a collect of $55,126.
