Craig Newitt got within one of his best ever haul of five winners when passed up an opportunity to ride at the Adelaide Cup meeting and stayed home for the program at Moonee Valley.

Newitt's four winners on Monday included Mick Price-trained stablemates Fast And Free ($3.60 fav) in the Slater & Gordon Lawyers Handicap (1523m) and Sir Fernando ($5 eq fav) in the National Union of Workers Handicap (1200m).

He picked up the winning ride on the Team Hawkes-trained Eastward ($2.45 fav) when Dan Nikolic could not make 54kg in the Windsor Management Insurance Brokers Handicap (1000m).

His other winner was Tasmanian Los Skybo ($9) for David and Scott Brunton in the CFMEU Eight Hour Labour Day Plate (1200m).

Newitt said he had ridden four Moonee Valley winners at a night meeting once before while he rode a career best five winners at Devonport in January last year.

Newitt won last month's Blue Diamond Stakes on the Price-trained Samaready and was keen to stick with the stable Moonee Valley.

"I could have had a couple of OK rides in Adelaide but just decided to stay here because Mick had couple of nice runners," Newitt said.

"I picked up couple of extra winners which is handy and the show rolls on."

Newitt leads the Victorian premiership and is closing in on Luke Nolen who now leads him by three on the Melbourne jockeys table.

Nikolic was fined $100 for failing to make the weight on Eastward and Tigeriffic while Nick Hall was also fined $100 when he had to forfeit the ride on The Night's Hot, also at 54kg.
