Epsom Handicap winner Captain Sonador will return in next month's Goldmarket Handicap at the Gold Coast ahead of a long-range plan to return to Sydney for the Group One Doncaster.

Trainer Roger Milne has yet to engage a jockey for the four-year-old's comeback in the Listed Goldmarket (1300m) on January 3 but has several in mind including his Epsom rider Glen Boss.

Locals Glen Colless and Shane Scriven are also in contention to partner Captain Sonador who hasn't started failing in the Group One Emirates Stakes (1600m) at Flemington on November 6.

Boss has indicated he's keen to come to Queensland to reunite with the entire in the Goldmarket and the Magic Millions Cup at the Gold Coast on January 15 but Milne wants to confer with owner Greg Wagner before making a decision.

"I haven't approached any rider yet but I've got a few in mind," Milne said.

"Glen Boss has shown an interest in coming up for these two runs in the Goldmarket and Magic Millions Cup but I've also spoken to Glen Colless, and Shane Scriven also is an option.

"I'm sure he'll get a lot of weight in both races and Glen (Colless) won't have to carry much dead weight if he rides him and neither would Shane."

Milne has pencilled in a short summer campaign for Captain Sonador who will then have a short break before returning to Sydney for the autumn carnival.

"He's only having these two runs before he has a short break and goes to Sydney," Milne said.

"Ideally I'd love to run him in the Doncaster."

Captain Sonador showed he was on track for the Goldmarket and the Magic Millions Cup (1400m) when he easily won a 900-metre barrier trial at Doomben last week.

The son of Shamardal led all the way to score by almost six lengths.

"He went a lot better than I expected in the trial," Milne said.

"I just brought him down for a gallop and the way he won really surprised me.

"I didn't think he was that far forward but he knew he had the trial afterwards."

After his Epsom victory, Captain Sonador campaigned in Melbourne during the spiring but looked out of his depth when eighth to champion So You Think in the Group One Cox Plate (2040m) at Moonee Valley on October 23.

Despite the failure Captain Sonador stayed in Melbourne but he again flopped when 13th to New Zealand star Wall Street in the Emirates Stakes.

Milne blamed feet problems for Captain Sonador's two Melbourne defeats.

"He had feet problems after he won the Epsom but they're fine now," Milne said.

"He had no wall in his hoof to nail into and he was going down on his bumpers.

"I used glue-on shoes on him for a while but he was sore in the feet when he got back home to Toowoomba."
