Shamardal, the sire of Monday's Goldmarket winner Captain Sonador, is making a pleasing recovery from surgery.

The Darley stallion underwent exploratory surgery in Newmarket, England, as soon as he returned from standing at the breeding giant's NSW Hunter Valley farm during the Australian stud season.

"Shamardal slipped and fell in Australia, and when he returned, we decided to carry out some investigative surgery," Darley director of stallions Sam Bullard told Racing Post.

"All the (northern hemisphere) breeders who have booked to him have been made aware but we are anticipating that he will have recovered well enough by the start of the season to be able to cover."

The young sire, who will stand the European season at Kildangan Stud in Ireland, has made a brilliant start to stud duties after his racing career netted four Group One victories.

As last year's Epsom Handicap hero, Captain Sonador is one of four Group One winners sired by Shamardal.

His other elite level stars include Bart Cummings's Oaks-winning mare Faint Perfume.

Captain Sonador is destined to follow his sire to stud after he tries to add to his Group One record this year.

Trainer Roger Milne has mapped out a Doncaster Mile and Stradbroke Handicap campaign for the four-year-old.
