Weight proved no barrier to Group One galloper Captain Sonador making a winning return to racing in the Goldmarket Handicap at the Gold Coast on Monday.

Captain Sonador, last year's Epsom Handicap winner, handled his 59kg with a minimum of fuss despite being asked to race closer to the pace than usual.

It took a bold Glen Boss ride but the four-year-old became the first horse in more than 30 years to carry 59kg to victory in the 1300m sprint.

At his first run since an unplaced effort in the Emirates Stakes at Flemington in November, Captain Sonador ($8) travelled third behind the speed and the four-year-old showed plenty of courage to wear down pacemaker Steel Lips ($21) to win by a length.

The 2009 Magic Millions and Golden Slipper winner Phelan Ready ($13) ran his best race this preparation to finish another three-quarters of a length third.

It was Boss' first victory in the Goldmarket and the champion hoop is already looking forward to riding Captain Sonador in the $400,000 Magic Millions Cup on January 15.

"He was never going to get beaten," Boss said.

"It was tradesman like more than it was flash.

"The Magic Millions race will be right up his alley and I will be able to ride him more conservatively.

"He is much better ridden quietly and when he is allowed to travel he explodes whereas today he was always off the bridle."

Steel Lips turned in a super performance off barrier 19 and his rider Kevin Forrester said he thought he had the race in his keeping.

"I had to make a decision off the wide alley and when he began so quickly I went forward," Forrester said.

"It was better than being six wide and I thought I was home at the 200 (metres)."

Phelan Ready will get his chance for a rematch with Captain Sonador in the Magic Millions Cup and trainer Jason McLachlan is confident the result will be reversed.

"He's just coming good at the right time now and he's right on target," McLachlan said.

"His run was excellent and he will be at his peak in two weeks time."

Race favourite Zero Rock was sent forward off the outside gate and she battled well in the straight to finish fifth.
