Jockey Jeff Penza's knowledge of the quirky Royal Thief will be vital to the gelding's chances at Queanbeyan.

The three-year-old will be chasing back to back wins in the 2KY Racing Radio Rating 67 Hcp (1400m) on Monday.

Trainer Ken Parsons is the first to admit it has taken him a while to figure out the best racing pattern for the son of Royal Academy.

"He's a funny horse, it's taken a bit to work him out," Parsons said.

"We tried riding him different ways before figuring him out.

"He can roll along at a high cruising speed, travel really well, but when he's let down, he doesn't sprint like you'd think.

"Sometimes he's actually gone slower. You've got to kid to him, just let him think he's still travelling at the same speed.

"Jeff (Penza) is a good front running rider. He won on him last start and knowing the horse certainly is a big plus."

Royal Thief, placed in a Sydney stakes race when under the care of David Payne, scored a game last start win in a 1400m Class 2 at Wagga on July 6 with Penza aboard.

His previous form was solid including a second to Snow Ridge over 1400m at Wellington on June 14.

"He won good the other day and I tend to try and keep him on the fresh side," Parsons said.

"I broke in the horse, he had a couple of jump-outs then EI (equine influenza) struck and he ended up going to David Payne.

"Royal Thief struggled a bit up there (Sydney) and the owners eventually sent him back to me.

"Unfortunately, at the weights, he's continually paying for his Sydney form and the 60kg tomorrow isn't ideal but I think he'll cope.

"The plan is to try and skip away down the hill into the straight.

"Hopefully they won't be able to run him down."

Penza has several other attractive rides on the seven race program including Patra Rivers (race two), Jewel Academy (race three), Save A Dollar (race four), Redemise (race five) and Solar Hawk (race six).
