THE 2007 Melbourne Cup winner Efficient, who has been cruelly thwarted in four other attempts at winning Australia's most important race, will not be making a fifth bid for success this spring, reports The Age.

It says: Owner Lloyd Williams yesterday confirmed that Efficient would not be ready for the Melbourne Cup, but said the eight-year-old was still a chance to race this spring. ''We won't have enough time to get him ready for the race,'' Williams said.

''He's been out for a long time and even though horses like him can look in good shape, they can often be deceivingly unfit because of the length of time they have been on the sidelines. They can be fat inside and you may not be aware of it. But I hope that I can have him up for the last week of the spring carnival. That will be his sole aim this spring.''
